IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD
by Joseph L. Amprey, Jr., Ph.D.
In Africa, there are few neglected children. This is because of their “collective spirit,’ the entire community involved in the rearing of children. We need to follow their example.
We all know that children raised in two parent families are the most likely to live happy and productive lives. We also know that far too many children do not have this benefit. However, as a community, we must band together for the benefit of all of our children.
All of our children, no matter what their family setting, can benefit from the numerous organizations that provide nurturance and mentorship for our children and youths. I am referring to the Olivet Boys and Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the Blacktop Basketball League, the Y. E. S. Mentoring Program, Big Brothers and Sisters, the Sisterhood, and Junior Achievement. All of these programs provide good leadership and constructive activities that build character.
Most importantly, let’s encourage our children and youths to be active in our churches.
The earlier they are when they begin to get involved in positive activities the better. It is much easier to build character in tots than it is to rehabilitate wayward teenagers and young adults. We should not limit our efforts to our family and friends. Let’s reach out to all youngsters who need encouragement and support.
Remember, it takes a village to raise a child.
